List Reasons Why YOU Would NEVER Go Back To The "Truth"
by minimus ini recently saw my jw brother and sil and listened to them talk about poor sister sick(o) who has been diagnosed with major mental problems.
she went to the doctor's and the doctor supposedly began to berate her out of the blue because she is a jehovah's witness.
now the family wants to have the doctor formally rebuked for his so called "discriminatory comments".

Do You Try To Be A Politically Correct Person? Why or Why Not???
by minimus inare you careful about what you say?
do you make sure that you won't offend anyone?

I guess if you don't have any racist, sexist attitudes to begin with, you don't have to worry about whether or not you're politically correct.

I don't like to offend people, but I often do, especially in writing, because I am always right. I am trying to be more aware of it.
Political correctness; I forget what that's about . . . like in a debate on something personally and politically charged, are you supposed to be politically correct or just give the facts? Or just personal anecdotes?
I feel pretty sure that personal innuendoes are inappropriate, but I think it happens often in heated debates because we live in such a polarized society and it causes most of us to assume stereotypical things about the person taking the opposite position, (like, if she had an abortion, she's a murderous whore or if he's anti-abortion, he hates women and such).
I care about peoples' feelings, but sometimes the facts are a key to unlock irrational fears and feelings, so political correctness might not be the answer.
I guess it depends on moods, settings and the issues, but if you're wrong about something or wrong in your approach to whatever is being discussed, it's probably a good idea to admit it and/or remove yourself from the discussion, which I also never have to do.

Is Happiness Genetic?
by compound complex indear friends,.
happiness abounds of late on the board.
idealism is great, tempered by reality.. i've had friends and family that were perpetually gloomy [often with good reason], but also those who were generally upbeat.

And happpiness comes and goes, regardless of genetic predisposition to anything.

Personality is totally dynamic.
I've seen personality changes due to hormonal issues, brain injuries, personality disorders (such as bi-polar), and medication issues in a number of people of all different ages throughout my life.
Much of it is related to heredity; some of it is not. And it does matter, especially if someone (or society as a whole) benefits by people with personality issues getting treatment for it.

At what point did you stop being an idiot?
by Hiddenwindow inwere you always an open-minded jw?
did you ever think that another brother was an apostate because he asked a simple logical question?
the latter, of course, is the most natural reaction among most jws.

I wish I could say that I stopped being an idiot and could blame all of my ignorance, insensitivity and arrogance on the JWs, but nature versus nurture - either way, it's all my parents' faults.

Have you changed your mind about ABORTION?
by nicolaou ini'm not after a discussion on the rights or wrongs on abortion, what i'm asking is whether or not your views have evolved over time.. perhaps leaving the watchtower was enough to allow your true feelings on abortion to find expression.
maybe abortion is one of those subjects where you still find yourself in agreement with your old jw self.
did becoming a mother change your perspective in any way or solidify your views?.

Here's the post that got me in a PMS mood.
Yes, adoption is a better answer than abortion, in most situations.
When was the last time you had to make that choice, and do you actually have empirical evidence to back up that statement? It'st he " you" that pissed me off.I appreciate your honest response, and I apologize for offending you. I am very accustomed to this kind of argument coming from people who often do not have a clue about what they are talking about. You made it clear that you are not one of those people, and I do apologize for offending you.
It is a very emotional issue for both parties. I did not intend to offend you. I do agree with some of what you are saying, but I still think it is better to have an abortion than to fill up the foster care system with exactly what you referred to - the "problem children" who will not get adopted. I think that your personal, anecdotal evidence is good enough for the purpose of a discussion board, but probably not for making public policy. I suspect you would agree that neither is mine. Edited to say that actually a lot of kids stay in foster care, not just "some." -
